Daemonicus: Swarm of death

06/09/07  ||  Lord K Philipson

Sweden’s Daemonicus (it was just a matter of time before someone came up with that name) pays tribute to the school of old when it comes to death metal, and more particularly the Swedish brand of it. Take one part Dismember and one part Entombed. Mix that together with some parts of Unleashed and Grave, add a few melodic passages and you got Daemonicus. The influences from these mentioned bands aren’t too overwhelming, but they are there. More some times, less at others.

These guys do nothing wrong with their shit but it doesn’t hold up all that fucken well either. Simply becoz it’s not catchy enough, it’s not brutal enough and it’s not as full of groove and insanity as I’d like it to be for me to enjoy it whole heartedly. Nonetheless it’s a fine demo in most aspects, just missing that little extra that would really put a huge smile on my face.

Out of the 3 tunes displayed here, the winner would be the title track with its neat Entombed/Dismember intro. Going about in that semi-fast Stockholm 90’s tempo, this one is kinda semi-grooving its way out of my speakers, though it’s still missing that “something” in the end, which is the main problem here, as mentioned.

The production is fine with quite a brutal guitarsound that I take a liking in. The musicianship seems ok as well, but still I can’t really get into it, no matter if it’s competent and all. For the time being I wouldn’t say that Daemonicus are ready for a full-length, but given time I’m sure they will put together something more memorable than “Swarm of death”. This is a decent start (though it’s not actually the “start” since this is their second demo) anyways.
